Seemingly set adrift
in the middle of the vast Pacific Ocean, the Hawaiian Islands
have always been a secluded and coveted piece of paradise. When
the Polynesians first happened upon them in their seafaring canoes
in around 250,450 AD, they took great pains to return again and
again.
And it's easy to see why. With world-famous
white sandy beaches, verdant tropical rainforests, chiseled green
mountains, and awe-inspiring waterfalls, Hawaii is hard to resist.
This chain of seven islands enjoys wonderfully mild weather and
plenty of sunshine year–round.
In the mid-1800s, sugar and pineapple plantations
brought together people from a plethora of ethnic backgrounds:
Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Tahitian, Vietnamese,
Samoan, Tongan, African-American, Portuguese, English, French,
German, Irish, Italian, Scottish, Spanish and Puerto Rican. The
result is a unique island culture that is as diverse as its population
— a diversity that can be found in everything from its fusion
cuisine to its mix of customs preserved from various homelands
and the pidgin English vernacular that is often spoken.
Today, Hawaii's 1.2 million residents enjoy
a laid-back lifestyle, one that incorporates a thriving culinary
scene, a rich cultural history, and, of course, activities that
take full advantage of the state's excellent beaches and natural
settings.
