The sanctuary fulfills its mission by raising funds for and supporting marine researchers, and though community outreach projects that educate and promote public awareness about the humpback whale.
Whale numbers dropped by 90% as a result of the whaling industry until a moratorium was placed on whaling in 1966. Whales are now protected and sought out by eager whale watchers, researchers and conservationists.
